Traditional navigation systems excel at optimizing for time and distance, but they overlook a crucial factor: safety. With 30% of collisions involving infrastructure-related factors, there's a clear need for navigation systems that can account for road safety in their routing decisions.

Most road safety approaches remain reactive, waiting for collisions to occur before identifying dangerous areas. This approach, while important, doesn't align with Vision Zero goals of preventing accidents before they happen. Our analysis of connected vehicle data has consistently shown that we can identify high-risk areas before collisions occur through patterns of harsh braking, speeding, and other driving behaviors.

Introducing Risk Aware for Navigation

Vianova Risk Aware for Navigation transforms our proven safety analytics into actionable insights for drivers. By combining multiple data streams including emergency braking events, speeding patterns, traffic volume, pedestrian and cyclist flows, historical crashes, and road conditions, we create a comprehensive risk score for every road segment. While this data has historically supported road managers in prioritizing infrastructure investments, it can easily be adapted to support road users to make smarter decisions.

Our system delivers contextual safety alerts to drivers through their navigation interface or a companion app. These alerts consider multiple risk factors, including:

Proven in Practice: Pilot with Software République

As part of our participation in Software République (an open innovation ecosystem for smart and sustainable mobility founded by Atos, Dassault Systèmes, Orange, Renault Group, STMicroelectronics, and Thales), Vianova has worked with one of the alliance's automotive members to complete a successful proof-of-concept integration.

This collaboration integrated Risk Aware alerts into the OEM's driver companion app, delivering real-time safety notifications to drivers. The pilot demonstrated the system's ability to effectively communicate risk information without overwhelming drivers, while maintaining the seamless experience users expect from their navigation apps.
