🚦 Safer Streets in Gothenburg: How Vianova Enhances Micromobility Safety

The VIASAFETY project brought together public, academic, and private sector partners to explore how connected vehicle data can improve micromobility safety in Gothenburg. Vianova played a central role in the project by processing and analyzing telematics data from delivery mopeds to identify risk zones and guide future infrastructure and policy decisions.

The Background

Micromobility in Gothenburg

Micromobility adoption has accelerated across Europe—and Gothenburg is no exception. With the rise of electric mopeds and shared e-scooters, cities face new challenges in protecting vulnerable road users and ensuring public space remains safe and accessible. Traditional safety data like crash reports can take years to accumulate, making it difficult for cities to respond in real-time to emerging risks.

The VIASAFETY project was launched to close this gap by capturing high-frequency, real-world movement data from micromobility vehicles. By combining vehicle telematics from delivery mopeds with AI-powered risk detection, the project sets out to build a replicable model for proactive safety analysis.

The Challenge

Unlike cars and trucks, vehicles like e-scooters and delivery mopeds often fall outside the scope of traditional road safety datasets. Independent couriers in particular operate under variable conditions, with limited visibility into their working environments and exposure to traffic risks.

  • 📡 Collect reliable, high-resolution data on micromobility behavior and vehicle dynamics.
  • ⚠️ Detect early signs of risk using behavioral signals like harsh braking, sudden acceleration, and swerving.
  • 🔒 Process this data while fully complying with GDPR and ethical standards.
  • 📊 Deliver insights that could inform policy, regulation, and infrastructure planning in real time.

Vianova’s Role

  • Data ingestion and processing: handling anonymized data collected from delivery mopeds.
  • Data cleaning and validation: removing noise and mapping trips to Gothenburg’s road network.
  • Developing algorithms: detecting safety-related behaviors like harsh braking, acceleration, and cornering.
  • Scoring road segments: generating risk scores for specific road sections based on normalized event frequency.
  • Delivering dashboards: enabling partners to view safety indicators, top high-risk locations, and patterns over time.

This work builds on Vianova’s previous safety analytics for connected vehicles in cities like London, Zurich, and Stockholm. For VIASAFETY, Vianova adapted its existing algorithms and visual tools to suit the local urban context in Gothenburg.

Project Highlights

20 mopeds with IoT tracking were used in the project.

  • Heavy braking (≤ –2.5 m/s²).
  • Speeding severity (minor to severe bands).
  • High acceleration and cornering events.

All data was fully anonymized, processed in secure environments, and retained for research use via SAFER and CLOSER platforms.

Risk Event Hotspots and Event Frequency Over Time.

Early Insights

  • 📍 Identify the top five high-risk streets for micromobility users, including Ullevigatan and Redbergsvägen.
  • 🚲 Spot clusters of harsh braking and cornering that align with known bottlenecks and pedestrian conflicts.

These insights are intended to support future infrastructure and policy evaluation efforts by city stakeholders.

Looking Ahead

The VIASAFETY project continues until January 2026, with final findings to be shared at the Drive Sweden Forum in 2026. Vianova’s platform will continue to support ongoing monitoring and collaboration among research and city partners.

The project also feeds into broader safety research initiatives, with data integrated into SAFER’s Naturalistic Driving Data Platform and CLOSER’s National Logistics Data Lab. For Vianova, VIASAFETY reinforces the company’s ability to deliver real-world safety intelligence across diverse urban environments.

By combining research-grade data collection with scalable digital tools, VIASAFETY represents a new model for collaborative, actionable road safety improvement.
