Olympic Mobility Trends: Paris, Lille, and Beyond

We’ll be putting together a comprehensive report of some of the mobility trends in our hometown of Paris based on connected phone data- sign up to receive info as soon as it’s released here.

But Paris wasn’t the only site of the games this year. Venues around France hosted events, including handball, football, sailing, even surfing in the French Territory of New Caledonia. One site to host multiple events was the Metropole of Lille, the site of every first round basketball game for both men and women.

Games were held in Stade Pierre Mauroy, located in Villeneuve-d’Asqc, near Lille. The stadium, the home to the LOSC football team, is about 6 kilometres from the centre of Lille. The Metropole did an exceptional job providing many travel options to the stadium, including metro and tram. As with many venues, parking was available nearby for bikes and scooters, including rental devices from Lime and Tier. Dedicated hubs were established near to the stadium to deal with the large volume of trips.

So did people travel to the game via micro-mobility? Using Vianova’s Mobility Manager, the Metropole was able to identify the key travel patterns to the venue, with a substantial spike for trips starting and ending in the vicinity coinciding with a number of popular tip-offs. While the volume of active mobility trips was low compared to the large number arriving by public transport, usage was highly correlated with the events.

Given that the distance to the densest parts of Lille was quite great, it was no surprise that bicycles were the preferred travel option over kick-scooters.

But trips came from all over the region, with a wide range of origins, as seen here using a sample from Friday, August 2nd. Trips by bicycle allowed for a much longer range for travellers than those by scooter.

The US got the best of France during the final contest held in Paris in the week following, but which team saw more fans arriving by micro-mobility?  According to the data, France took the gold, with a higher number of trips for their 2nd August loss to Germany by shared mobility than The US’s group match against Serbia.
